4×4 Manchester met in May 2016 to answer the Big Questions. The second event asked speakers to explore the topic of Love.

Mick Timpson
Mick Timpson describes himself as an Architect of change. Mick is a Social Entrepreneur working in the fields of yoga and meditation based personal, workplace and community wellbeing, creativity and happiness. Mick is the founder and CEO of beanddo™ – a specialist meditation based training consultancy promoting happiness, creativity and wellbeing techniques for business and education.
Mick has a double first in architecture and practiced as a chartered architect for over 30 years. He has taught design and led studios in a number of Architecture Schools in London and the South East.
As an architect Mick has worked on projects all over the world from Mexico, city Moscow, Helsinki, Dubai to Manchester and was a lead designer on the master plan to rebuild Manchester after the IRA bombing.
Emily Crompton
Emily is an Architect and currently co-coordinates a research project titled Manchester Age Friendly Neighborhoods at Manchester School of Architecture. Emily previously worked as an Urban Designer at URBED and remains involved with the company through the URBED trust, which she is helping to set up. Emily is a regular associate lecturer on the BA Hons Architecture course at Manchester School of Architecture, where she teaches first year students. She has contributed an essay to an MSAp publication and retrospective exhibitions. She is also an ambassador for placed, a not-for-profit company which delivers tailor made workshops for 11-18 year-olds outside of the school environment, an Academician and Local Area Coordinator and organised the previous 4×4: A Human City and 4×4: Reunion lecture series’ in Manchester.
Sophia de Sousa
As Chief Executive at The Glass-House Community Led Design since 2005, Sophia is committed to the charity’s mission to raise the standard of placemaking through public participation and leadership in the design of buildings, spaces, housing and neighbourhoods. She works to ensure that such community participation and leadership is not a token gesture, but a valuable means of informing good, inclusive, sustainable design that benefits local people and that leads to the long-term improvement of neighbourhoods. Sophia is a leading advocate and enabler of community led, participatory and co-design practice and research, and is committed to interdisciplinary working and cross-sector partnerships. Sophia sits on a number of advisory groups and panels including the Historic England Urban Panel and the Place Alliance, and has extensive experience in hands-on delivery of training and support to community groups and professionals to enable collaborative placemaking.
Robert Powell
Robert Powell is a poet, writer, editor, and curator, and is currently Creative Director of Beam, an arts and architecture company based in Wakefield, Yorkshire. He has written widely on the visual arts and photography and worked with a range of artists, photographers and organisations on exhibitions and other creative projects.
