Engineers are from Mars and the Academy is from Venus – and if so, what is to be done about it?
At The Urbanism Hour this week we will be joined by two speakers who cross the professional boundaries of urban design and highways design. The session will focus on the intersection of engineering the urban design and the barriers that prevent better outcomes for those who use the spaces that are created. Ultimately, is it time for the Academy to play a greater role in changing this pattern?
John Dales, co-founder and Director of Urban Movement, will talk about some of the excellent work of engineers to enhance the places in which they work. John will outline some of the most successful approaches to highways engineering that integrate the principles of good urbanism. John’s reputation is based on his project work, which encompasses the conception, design, execution and management of a wide range of transport, traffic and street improvement projects in towns and cities all over the UK.
Colin Davis, an architect, town planner and member of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation, will speak about what he deems to be the “elephant in the room” – the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges. By following this default government advice, the creation of successful places is almost impossible.
