Event / Mercats, Fishbones, Clachans and Howffs: A talk by Malcolm Fraser

November 11, 2015 @ 17:30 - 19:30 GMT

Malcolm Fraser of Halliday Fraser Munro Architects will discuss how historic Caledonian urban forms enclose and shelter in ways that are beautifully tuned to landscape, climate and social gathering.

Malcolm will discuss how his work has drawn on pre-‘improvement’ urban forms. From the Old Town of Edinburgh to Orkney, Lewis and rural Scotland he will show projects whose focus on modernist concerns of space, light and democratic space reinvigorate traditional urban forms – forms that are too often eclipsed by the triumph of the New Urbanist street-and-block, obscuring a past whose rich traditions are often better suited to today’s placemaking concerns.
