Good urbanism can only be delivered by pan-professional collaboration, support from central and local government and the will and determination of the wider community. To reflect this, membership of the Academy is broad and inclusive. It is a privilege to be a member and with that comes responsibility.
The Academy has been formed by invitation and consists of 100 people drawn from a wide range of backgrounds and with a shared passion for, and an acknowledged understanding of, the art of great place-making. As well as participating in the awards process, members are encouraged to initiate or give support to an educational event or activity on an annual basis appropriate to their own personal and/or professional capacity and drawing on the skills and enthusiasm of other academicians wherever possible.
The Academy of Urbanism is run by The Academy of Urbanism Ltd, whose Directors have been drawn from the founding members of its Executive Committee.
The Academy is a not-for-profit organisation.
In addition to the Executive Committee, the Academy is supported by the Academicians and named representatives of its affiliated organisations, sponsors and its education and media partners.
Linda Gledstone is the Academy’s Director of Communications and her work is supported by The Executive Committee, its Education and Awards Groups and Sascha Ritchie, the Academy's Events Coordinator.
The Academy is working with its Media Partners at a regional and local level to ensure that the Awards and the work of the Academy as a whole is promoted throughout Great Britain and Ireland. Throughout 2007, the Academy will be working more closely with media partners throughout mainland Europe in promoting European City of the Year, Europe-wide.
Ian McMillan is the Academy's Poet-in-Residence and he produced 15 individual poems for each of the short listed nominations for The Urbanism Awards 2006 and 2008.
