‘Great places are like great jazz – a rich sensory experience you respond to differently on each occasion…’

The positive place agenda means thinking differently about creating real places - learning the new and old skills we need, and then acting differently -to ensure not just their delivery, but the nurturing of their vitality.

Narrowly tribal professionals, incapable of coping with the past, with compromise or with real people, cannot deliver truly liveable towns and cities.

We all need to work more imaginatively with different people – residents, politicians, businesses and children - liberating ourselves to design and manage places of enduring quality. We need to listen and explore, as well as plan and lead.

Making good urbanism is a mental culture. Absolutely mental. Better get your head into that special place…
