Acoustic ecology of great places

Deadline for submissions: 10 July 2015

We are looking for a couple of Young Urbanists to join us in a practical exploration of how we can develop soundscape assessment methods for the Urbanism Awards, looking at The Great Place Award in particular. Last year John Drever AoU instigated this process by devising short soundscape compositions of each of the shortlisted places.

This year, John and the team will visit our three Great Place finalists: Irvine Harbour in Irvine, Scotland; Peace Bridge and Ebrington Square in Derry~Londonderry, Northern Ireland; and Scale Lane Bridge in Hull, North East England.

John will mentor this project in collaboration with research students from the Unit for Sound Practice (SPR) at Goldsmiths, University of London, and soundscape agency Otoloci. The SPR has funds to cover travel expenses of two Young Urbanists.

If you are interested please send a short paragraph of your interest in urbanism and soundscapes to j.drever@gold.ac.uk by the 10th July 2015. You will need to be available to visit the three shortlisted locations in early September.

(static website) Great project. I just wonder why its always seems to be ‘young’ artists who are invited in this age of alleged equal opportunity, it is as if we of mature age are neither capable or available to offer experience, expertise, insights and vision to such a project?
